A quick way to reduce allergens is to wash holiday decor that is coming out of storage.
Those adorable blankets and pillows that we love to throw on the couch are full of dust from being stored. You can machine wash them if the instructions allow for that. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, extreme temperatures kill dust mites. Dust cannot survive either hot or cold extremes. Simply use a hand held steamer or put items in a bag and place them in the freezer for 48 hours. You can also do this with curtains that you may not be able to wash.
For florals, use a damp cloth to wipe off the arrangement. Quickly dust all accessories and decor items that are not fabric. Run all dishes, glasses and serving ware through the wash before using it. Even if they appear clean, they have dust on them. Wiping down the exterior of the bins annually is a great idea as well. It creates a more healthy storage area.
